CFDA Celebrates 60th Anniversary with an Exclusive Metaverse Fashion Event

The CFDA has gathered a varied collection of American designers for a first-of-its-kind digital exhibition in the metaverse with the mission of bridging the past, present, and future of the fashion industry. The CFDA is 60 this year, so it's kind of like a birthday celebration.

Both are part of the CFDA’s 60th anniversary celebrations– looking into the future via web3.

The exhibit was conceptualized by creative consultant 5th Column. “Think of it as a mini MET exhibition in the metaverse, with beautiful images and scenes recreated in voxelized form,” 5th Column founder and CEO Akbar Hamid told Forbes. He added that the goal was to “appeal to the existing fashion community, but also to reach out to the gamer community and introduce them to these brands.”

CFDA in the metaverse

This is the CFDA's first event in the metaverse. The organization previously made an appearance on Web3 in April to announce a partnership with The Sandbox and Polygon, two businesses that offer Layer 2 scaling solutions for the Ethereum blockchain.

The fashion platform Web3 Brand New Vision and NFTs collaborated on the design of the NFTs. To enable credit/debit card payments, CFDA has also partnered with MoonPay.

CFDA X The Sandbox

The Sandbox will host the CFDA's first event. Both traditional fashions from the past and classic styles from the future will be honored. There will be vintage-inspired outfits featured, all of which have been reinvented in voxel form for The Sandbox.

Additionally, from December 12 through December 16, the CFDA held an auction for the NFTs using the NFT platform Brand New Vision. The high opening bids, which have ranged between $15,000 and $25,000, indicate the NFTs' special worth. NFT technology is considered by some as a method to bring the fashion industry up to more people, in contrast to how exclusive it already is.

The CFDA sees the activation as a way to celebrate the history of fashion while simultaneously employing Web3 technology to look to the future. Not to mention, some fashion designers have already started utilizing Web3 technology, notably during important events like the New York and Paris fashion weeks.

Despite the fact that this is the CFDA's first event in the metaverse, it was previously covered by Web3 news when it announced a relationship with The Sandbox and Polygon, two businesses that offer layer-2 scaling solutions for the Ethereum blockchain. The partnership's CEO at the time, Steven Kolb, indicated that one goal was to train upcoming corporate leaders in the Web3 sector
