Japanese gaming giant's official entry into blockchain by launching its First NFT Game in Spring 2023

Meet Symbiogenesis - a Web3 title by Square Enix

Guess what? Square Enix, the company that created Final Fantasy, has unveiled Symbiogenesis as its first NFT game. That marks the Japanese gaming giant's official entry into blockchain gaming on a larger scale.

Symbiogenesis is a digital art experience that lets gamers collect in-game characters as NFTs, according to the announcement. These NFTs are playable characters who will be a part of the game's interactive lore in addition to being able to be used as profile pictures (PFPs).

"The art can be used for social media profile pictures (PFP) and as a character in a story that takes place in an alternate world where the player can 'untangle' a mystery by completing missions that revolve around questions of the monopolization and distribution of resources. With each strategic move players make, more of the story unfolds," Square Enix released a statement.

Despite the lack of details, the company intends to build Symbiogenesis on Ethereum, with the game slated to release on PC and mobile devices in Q1 2023.

The community responds

As usual, traditional gamers are eager to criticize Square Enix's latest NFT project. Some simply called it "crap", while others couldn't stress enough that "NFTs are a scam" and that launching such projects would "tarnish" the firm's reputation.

However, some took a more positive view of the upcoming game. As Twitter user Frgt10 said: "Don't fade the early alpha."

The journey into Web3

Late last year, Square Enix turned to Web3 and has since made some significant investments to research the emerging industry. Before collaborating with Enjin to introduce its first NFT project in July, the corporation sold off its Tomb Raider IP and additional assets for $300 million in May.

It quickly advanced to become Oasys' 21st node validator for blockchain gaming. In the 2022 Annual Report, the corporation reiterated its emphasis on NFT gaming.

The success of its NFT endeavors is still uncertain. However, it appears that Square Enix is not being prevented from becoming Web3.
